This is my first article. I wrote it for The Big Tip on 29/01/11. It is un-edited
I was playing Football Manager the other day, as funny as it sounds. I have come quite addicted to it actually. My team is AFC Telford. We are in the 5th Division of English Football. Because we can’t pay as much for bigger players, I have found myself searching for free agents a lot. I came across one name I hadn’t heard before. He was Australian and partly Turkish. His Name is Ersan Gulum.
Although, in real life, he Definitely is not a free agent. Born in Melbourne, Ernsan currently plays for Beskitas in the Top Turkish league, the same league as Harry Kewell and Lucas Neill. He has been described as the best Defender in Turkey. He has lived in Turkey since he was 18. The thing that has come up for discussion as late is which country that this talented youngster will play for.
He represented The Australian U23’s and was captain of the Schoolboys Team before he moved to Turkey. But, he has chosen Turkey. His main reason being that, if he didn’t choose Turkey, the Turkish Media would be “On his back”. I personally think this is the worst reason ever. I think what he meant to say is that Turkey is better than Australia. What happened to Loyalty these days? Sure his name is Turkish, but he was born in Australia. Same with Josip Simunic except with Croatia. Josip was born in Canberra. Isn’t the ultimate dream to play for your country?
